India in SL

After the 2-1 drubbing in the Tests, I hadn't expected much from the ODIs. But Dhoni's return & the seniors exit resulting in some improved performances saw India winning their 1st ever bilateral series against SL in SL.

This tour has been quite a watershed though. The big 4 - Sachin, Saurav, Dravid & Laxman failed miserably in the tests. It's the beginning of the end for them. It's going to mark the end of an era, surely.

Karzzzz

I'll hand it to Himesh. The lyrics are cheeky; the hooks are repetitive; the remixes sound tired & his voice jars.

Still, this album will be one of the biggest hits this year. The songs have excellent hummability & recall value.

European GP

There was a GP going on at Valencia while the world was watching the Olympics.

Massa finished 1st with Hamilton 2nd. Maclaren now trail Ferrari by just 8 points. The next few races should be interesting.

The 2008 Summer Olympics

The closing ceremony for Beijing 2008 is on as I write this.

Most will remember this edition for Michael Phelps' exploits, but for Indians these have been the best Olympics ever in terms of medal count.

Mssrs Abhinav ....
.... Sushil ....
.... and Virender ....

.... contributing a Gold & 2 Bronzes to bring up a grand total of 3 medals.

This enabled India to finish 50th (51st in terms of total medals) from among about 200 countries. It sounds bad for a country of this size, but if anyone had suggested such a final tally before the Olympics began, most wouldn't have thought even this possible. So, it's been good, but we still have a long, long way to go.

As for the Top 10 ....

..... China has emerged with the highest Golds, but trails the US in terms of total. I expected Australia to do better than they did, while South Korea was the surprise performer this year.

All in all, China have achieved what they set out to do - organize a superb Olympics efficiently & on a scale never seen before. They've proven their sporting prowess & announced their arrival on the world stage with a bang. Good for them.

Before ending, here is the Google logo for today -

And finally, a thought that has been on my mind for sometime - 70 years back, there was another country poised on the brink of greatness & wanted desperately to showcase it's superiority on the world stage. Their capital was also awarded the Olympics & in 1936, they organized them successfully. 3 years later, to complete their visions of world domination - they began World War 2.

Indica Vista

The Indica's latest avatar is here.

Looks quite taut from the brochure photos, but let's wait for real life pics to check out the improvements to build quality, if any.

And what's with Tata & name borrowing. The small car was christened Nano soon after Apple had come out with the iPod Nano & now this sounds inspired from Windows Vista. I hope the variants aren't called Home/Premium/Ultimate!

apna iPhone

Apple launched the iPhone 3G in India today via Vodafone & Airtel. I think we're the only country where it's officially available through 2 networks.

Independence Day

We should have been where we are today a long time ago. But the thing to note is we are here. Alive & kicking. And there might be many wishing to be where we are now.

Warts & all, this country has started getting a move on, even if I say so myself. If only more people would realize this & work to make things better instead of taking things for granted.

Anyway, a happy 61st to everyone!

Lovely movie. Even though I'd seen it before .... about 20 years ago. After all, how often do you get Stallone & Pele sharing screen space?

A shot of an IAF IL-78 Midas/MKI along with 4 SU-30 MKIs in Portugal on the way to Nevada for Red Flag 2008.

An awesome shot & my current wallpaper.

Can't get these lines from Shehzad Roy's new song "laga reh" out of my head .....

"buzurgon ne mujh se poocha, nek kaun hai ye to bataa,
buzurgon ko maine bola, nek wo hai ...... jise mauka nahi mila"

Kinda reminds me of that line Prashanth keeps repeating - "virginity is not dignity, but lack of oppurtunity".

Ha!

Hungarian GP

Kovalainen gets his 1st F1 win. Ferrari's Massa was unlucky after he had an engine failure 3 laps from the finish. He wasn't the only unlucky one though. Hamilton finished 5th after a puncture.

McLaren are just 11 points behind Ferrari now.

Hancock

Loved the story & it's twists. And the visual effects. Will Smith does well, while Charlize looks stunning.
